What is NPS?
The National Pension System (NPS) is a government-sponsored retirement savings scheme. It allows you to build a retirement corpus through regular contributions, with tax benefits under Section 80CCD.
How NPS Works
- You contribute regularly until retirement (age 60)
- Funds are invested in equity, corporate bonds, and government securities
- At retirement, you can withdraw 60% as lump sum (tax-free)
- 40% must be used to buy an annuity (monthly pension)
Tax Benefits
- Section 80CCD(1): Part of the ₹1.5 lakh combined limit (Old Regime)
- Section 80CCD(1B): Additional ₹50,000 deduction (Old Regime)
- Section 80CCD(2): Employer contribution — available in New Regime too
Annuity Options
The 40% annuity portion is used to buy a pension plan from an insurance company. Common options include:
- Pension for life (self only)
- Pension for life with return of purchase price
- Pension for life with 50% to spouse
- Pension for life with 100% to spouse
Important Note
NPS returns are market-linked and not guaranteed. Equity exposure is capped at 75% (for private sector). This calculator provides an estimate based on your inputs.
